Insurance for a farm
Whether you manage a big industrial farm that supplies to businesses across the country or you run a small family farm that only sells locally, farm insurance is a necessity for most agricultural suppliers.
Farms are the bedrock of our food industry, with around 61% of food consumed in the UK produced on domestic farms. So, with such a heavy reliance on our agricultural industry, it is vital that farms are well protected against the many issues that they can come up against.
Farm insurance offers a wide range of cover that consolidates many different types of insurance under one simple policy.
We are going to take a look at farm insurance, what it covers, who needs it, and how to get it.
What is farm insurance?
Farm insurance, also known as agricultural insurance, provides cover specifically for farms and the wide range of issues that farmers can face. Farm insurance can cover livestock, machinery, crops, workers, buildings, and all manner of other farmyard liabilities.
Whatever the size of your farm, we tailor our farm insurance policies to suit the specific needs of your business and land. A-Plan fosters and cherishes a strong connection with rural communities and we have a network of specialists in provinces across the country who understand the unique issues faced by farms and agricultural workers. So whatever the needs of your farm, we will strive to offer you the exact cover you require.
What is covered by farm insurance?
Different farms have different insurance requirements and our policies are tailored to you rather than being fixed. So below is a list of what a farm insurance policy can include, though you can contact us and speak to one of our experts if there is additional cover you would want to add.
Property damage covers buildings, farm machinery, equipment, and other farm property such as agricultural produce, but not livestock. It can even include elements of home insurance, depending on the setup of the farm. A claim may be made in the event of a fire, theft, accident, natural disaster, vandalism, or other contingencies such as tree falls or aircraft crashes.
Property in transit
Property in transit covers any goods that are owned by the farm or for which the farm is responsible whilst in transit. This might include produce and saleable goods, packing materials, the driver's personal property, tools and equipment.
Livestock can be very expensive and many farms have hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of animals for various types of produce. Livestock is liable to disease, theft, and injury, they may also be responsible for third-party damage caused to another person's vehicle or property. Our farm insurance covers your livestock against such issues.
Every employer is legally obliged to have employer's liability insurance, even if they have only one worker or highly casualised staff. Employer's liability covers both you and your employees should one of them be injured or harmed whilst working on your farm. Our farm insurance can include employer's liability that will cover wages and legal expenses in the event of a claim.
Public and product liability
Public and product liability covers you against any illness or harm that is caused to customers and the public because of your farm or its produce. For example, if a customer becomes ill after consuming animal products from your farm, then public and product liability would cover your legal fees if they decided to take you to court.
Environmental liability offers cover against accidental environmental damage caused by pollution from your farm, such as fuel spillage. It covers third-party damage, clean-up costs, environmental damage costs, and legal fees.
Personal accident and sickness
Personal accident and sickness offers cover for you and your employees against bodily injury and illness. Our cover includes medical and surgical expenses.
This covers any money stolen from your property. It is not the same as loss of revenue cover.
Loss of revenue
Loss of revenue for a farm can happen for multiple reasons. There may be issues with a supplier or a client, you may have had livestock troubles, or maybe you have been hit by personal or employee sickness. Loss of revenue provides cover for the losses your farm makes for reasons that are beyond your control.
Are my vehicles covered?
Our farm insurance can be extended to include some agricultural vehicles, though there is also specialised agricultural vehicle insurance available that is likely to offer a wider range of cover. The agricultural vehicles covered by farm insurance must be used solely for agricultural purposes.
Farm insurance cannot cover vehicles that are used on roads, as they require third-party vehicle insurance at a minimum.
Do I need farm insurance?
In short, yes, but it does depend.
Most farms have some aspect that legally requires insurance, though this does not necessarily need to be farm insurance. For example, if you have workers on your farm, then you are legally obliged to have employers' liability insurance. However, this doesn't have to be as part of a farm insurance package.
Farm insurance is offered as a means of simplifying many different forms of cover under one policy that is easy to manage and renew.
While not every farm is legally obliged to have farm insurance, it is highly recommended that you do so. Farms and farmers face a unique set of risks and liabilities and the costs of damages or losses can be far too big for a single business to cover.
If you run a smaller farm, you may be able to survive without insurance. But even then you must be careful when it comes to issues such as product liability that can incur hefty legal fees.
What to do before requesting a farm insurance quote
Before approaching us for a farm insurance quote, you should check to see what is already covered by existing policies you may have. This might include vehicle insurance, property insurance, employers liability cover, or any of the other forms of cover that can be included under a farm insurance policy.
You may want to keep your existing policies, but one of the perks of farm insurance is that it keeps all of your different forms of cover under one simple policy that is easily managed.
Before requesting a quote, you should also have a compiled document with information such as the size and location of your farm, the total value of your equipment and livestock, the farm's annual revenue, and the number of employees currently working on the farm.
